Let’s face it! Some people just don’t care about being on time. I guess they were taught that being late is fashionable. On the other hand, many of us were taught that being late is rude. What are your thoughts on this?
As a business owner who relies on word of mouth referrals for the majority of my business, my opinion is that being late, or not showing up at all, really kills your credibility. For those fashionably late people, you might be wondering why. Here are some reasons why that you are hurting your credibility.
1. It is rude! People’s time is really valuable these days. If you are late, especially by 15 minutes, you are wasting their time and putting them behind schedule.
2. If you are the one that is late, then you’ve been probably running late for appointments the entire day, and guess what, you are stressed! You are probably driving a little fast, trying to punch directions in on your GPS while driving, and probably skipped a meal. You might be grumpy, unfocused, or both!
3. Here’s the biggest reason being late is not good. The person you are meeting with is most likely vetting you. They are either a potential client and looking for red flags trying to decide whether they should hire you or not, or they are in a position to refer a client to you. Do you think they are going to put their reputation behind you if you can’t even show up on time for an appointment? Especially if you are a business coach, banker, financial advisor, attorney or anyone who’s profession is high on the trust curve, you’ve basically just blown your chances either way.
Now, if you totally blow off an appointment, well that’s a much bigger problem. I hear people complain about it all the time. I survey people who network and ask them what they don’t like about networking. One of the top 5 answers is getting stood up for appointments. What are these people thinking? If you blow off a referral partner, do you really think you’re going to get the referral? If you blow off a potential client, do you think they are going to give you the business?
