Birds and Business

You may be thinking, what the heck do birds have to do with business?  The other day, I had some time in between appointments so I got a coffee and parked near the water in Clearwater.  I don’t sit still very often and just ponder the universe, but I found myself watching two different kinds of birds, and for whatever reason, comparing them to my business and business in general.  Weird, I know!  What I was thinking as I saw a particular bird shaking his legs in the water, was that it was shaking his feet in the sand to scare up the fish so that he could eat.  Interesting I thought since my 2016 started out with shaking things up.  I left a networking group that I had been a part of for 6 years.  It was a tough decision, but I felt stagnant and frustrated, and I knew it was time to go.  It was time to shake things up in order to accomplish the goals I have this year.  The other bird I was watching was a pelican, and this bird was laser focused on the fish beseabirdneath it, and it was dive bombing fish in order to eat.  I suddenly realized that successful business people have to keep focused on the target in order to make their goals which in turn puts food on the table for their family.  They need to eat too!  I took it one step further.  Birds don’t have attitudes about this process from what I know.  They eat to live, and they go thru this process every day to find food.  They never overthink it, grumble about it, or put off doing it – they simply just do it!  What if we as entrepreneurs could be just like the bird – always on the hunt, always shaking things up, always keeping our eye on the target?  I think I will apply the “bird strategy” to my business in 2016!  What about you?

Thank you for sharing your observation of nature and how that applies to us as entrepreneurs. Make it happen is one of my themes for 2016 and now I can relate it to how Pelicans focus like a laser beam and just do it.
