How To Fall In Love With Your Home Again

lovehomeIn my last post, we discussed how prioritizing organization can help you achieve your health and wellness goals in 2015. However, clutter and chaos can profoundly impact all areas of your life, including your relationships. The division of domestic responsibilities is one of the top issues couples argue about. Sex and intimacy is another. Coincidence? I think not. Since the state of your home undoubtedly affects how your feel, it stands to reason that your romantic life could also suffer if your space is in disarray.

In honor of Valentine’s Day this month, I encourage you to commit to falling in love with your space all over again!

  1. Make a great first impression with your foyer. Remember how you felt the first time you walked through the door of your home? That first impression more than likely set your expectations for the rest of the property and played an instrumental role in determining whether or not you liked the place or felt it was the right fit for you. We all know first impressions are everything, so the scene that greets you upon entering your home can set the tone for the rest of your evening. After a long day, a foyer littered with mail, sports bags, umbrellas, toys, and shoes doesn’t exactly scream sanctuary. It’s only right that you start rekindling your romance with your home in the room where you first fell in love, so begin by tackling your foyer.

  2. Rekindle your kitchen romance. Can you cook or eat a meal in the midst of dirty dishes, chaos, and clutter? Technically, yes. Will you enjoy it? No way! Cooking doesn’t have to be drudgery; making a meal with the one your love can be downright sexy! That being said, a disorganized kitchen will hardly help reignite the passion, so commit to rekindling your kitchen romance by rearranging your space to be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. Even if you and your partner split mealtime preparation and cleanup responsibilities (one of you cooks and the other cleans), an orderly kitchen will put you both in better spirits and you’ll be less likely to shirk your duties or argue over them.

  3. Take back your bedroom. Is your bedroom conducive to rest and romance? If you have laundry piled up all over the place and clothes spilling out of hampers, bureaus, and closets, the answer is no. Chaos isn’t restful or sexy, so it’s time to take back your bedroom. This could entail re-organizing your closets or simply relegating your laundry to its rightful home. Once you’ve cleared the clutter, there are several steps you can take to reclaim the serenity of your space. Rearrange the furniture, change the paint, add a new rug or some inspirational artwork. If you need a new mattress and can’t afford it at the moment, start saving up for one now. When it comes to relaxation (and other bedroom activities), a comfortable mattress, nice linens, and good lighting are key to setting the mood!

Are you ready to fall in love with your space all over again? Rededicate yourself to your home this February and watch your romance bloom once more!
